Sifteo Cubes A Holiday Hit

If video games and traditional toys were to have a secret love child, it might look a lot like the Sifteo cube.

Sifteo Cubes (Sifteo)
Introduced as a prototype at a TED conference in 2009, the gadget/toys are a fusion of classic building blocks and cutting-edge tech. And while it's a bit early to label the Sifteo this year's frenzy-inducing hot holiday toy, don't be surprised if it ends up on a lot of gamer wish lists.

Think of the cubes, which begin shipping in September, as "smart building blocks" — the techno-savvy next step for LEGOs and Lincoln Logs. They measure 1.5-inches each and come armed with an internal gyroscope and a clickable color screen. They also know when they're near each other — and that's when the fun starts. As you move, tilt and flip the cubes, they interact with one another, which opens up all sorts of play possibilities.

Early reviews of the device have been fairly glowing.

"I'm happy to report that trying them for myself stoked my enthusiasm rather than dampened it," writes Time's Harry McCracken. "They're genuinely new and well done, and they have great potential. Countless toys have claimed to be the future of play; Cubes could actually deliver on that promise."

And David Pogue at the New York Times calls them "a kick in the imagination" and notes "nobody's ever seen anything like them".

It's pretty compelling stuff, but before you reach for your wallet, it's important to note there are some sizable hurdles Sifteo will have to overcome before it takes the market by storm.

The biggest is price. A cube starter kit -- which comes with 3 cube and a charging station -- costs $150. Extra cubes cost $45. To put that in context, you can pay the same amount for either a new Wii, a Kinect sensor, or three Sifteo cubes. That's tough competition.

Content is also a bit of an issue, as only a few games are included. The rest are purchased in an app store, of sorts, with prices ranging from free to $5 (for the better games).

Also, despite their size, the cubes don't travel very well. They have to be within 20 feet of a computer to operate, and all sounds come from that computer as well. Not exactly vacation-friendly. (Though to Sifteo's credit, the search for an alternative is already underway.)

It's a tough sell, but the company founders say they offer something their competitors don't.

"Classic games … have been a part of human experience for a really long time," co-founder David Merrill told Gamastura. "That's what we used to talk about when we would talk about social games -- before the Zyngas of the world came along and changed the definition. Video games lose that dynamic of across-the-table play. You're either buried in your own personal display -- or there's a big screen on the wall, for things like Kinect. … None of the current modern video game [systems] recreate the around-the-table classic game feel. Sifteo brings together these two great traditions."

There are 15 games available for the system today, including Moon Marble, in which you tilt a cube to guide a ball through a series of mazes, and the built-in Creativity Kit, which lets users create their own games by putting cubes in the right order — a boon for educational purposes.

Sifteo isn't the only video game/toy hybrid hitting the market this year. Activision has been beating the drum loudly for Skylander's: Spyro's Adventure and, to a lesser extent, Wappy Dog. And Hasbro has an LCD block version of its popular vocabulary game called Scrabble Flash.

Still, Sifteo says it believes the familiar elements of the cubes will help it stand out from the crowd.

"I think our system taps into a classic understandable type of gameplay," says co-founder Jeevan Kalanithi. "It's not the case that we're coming so far out of left field that people won't know what we're doing."

Portal 2 proposal wows Web

A video game isn't usually considered a particularly romantic form of expression.

But when Gary Hudston's girlfriend Stephy celebrated her 21st birthday this week, he relied on a game to help express his feelings -- and what resulted is one of the best video game marriage proposals of all time.

A little backstory: The couple had been dating for five years, and Hudston had always promised that his proposal would be both geeky and unique. Having made up his mind to take the plunge, he reached out to the modding community for critical darling Portal 2. The result was a fantastic trio of levels for Portal 2 that eventually led to a proposal voiced by none other than the game's lovable villain, GLaDOS.

"I surprised her with the mod after she was done opening her presents," Hudston told Yahoo! Games. "She was confused at first, but played along as she knew I was clearly up to something. She tells me that it crossed her mind that it might be a proposal but she decided that she was getting ahead of herself and that it was probably just an elaborate birthday gift. That was until she realized that GLaDOS was talking directly to her."

"From that point on she was quiet, save for some muttered disbelief and, by the time GLaDOS was asking her the question, she was in tears. When she looked over to me I was already on one knee with the ring. Also in tears."

Check out the awesome Star Trek wedding proposal

In-game proposals have happened before, but part of what makes this one so engaging is that Hudston had managed to enlist the help of Portal 2 creators, Valve Software.

He didn't have a lot of luck at first, but then reached out directly to Ellen McLain, the voice of GLaDOS.

"She was just lovely, and with her help we were able to contact [Portal 2 writer] Erik Wolpaw who promised to try and fit in some time to record some dialogue for me," says Hudston.

A month later, Wolpaw told him of an opening in a recording session. Hudston stayed up until 4:00 am putting together words that rang true with GLaDOS, but still made it quite clear that he was proposing.

That took care of the audio, but he had no game to go with it.

Hopping onto the forums of ThinkingWithPortals.com, he put out a call for help — one that was answered by talented modders Douglas "TopHATTwaffle" Hoogland and Rachel "Miss Stabby" van der Meer. Over the next six weeks, the team worked furiously to brainstorm and complete the mod. (Want to live the romance? Hoogland has graciously made the proposal mod downloadable.)

It takes a special kind of gamer -- and future spouse -- to pull off a cool video game proposal, but when they're done right, they're pretty spectacular. One gamer named Phil asked his now-wife to marry him by hacking her copy of Chrono Trigger, while a developer from Bioware proposed to his girlfriend (who also happened to work at the studio) by building a custom level in Minecraft.

Hudston's proposal was certainly more high-profile. And one thing's for certain: When the couple finally does get married -- currently scheduled for February 2012 -- there's bound to be no end to the "The cake is a lie" jokes at their reception.

GameStop removing free coupons from Deus Ex: Human Revolution

The battle over digital game distribution just took a turn for the ugly.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Square Enix)
Video game retail giant GameStop has been opening up brand new PC game boxes of the critically-acclaimed shooter Deus Ex: Human Revolution and removing packed-in coupons granting free copies of the game to users of the OnLive cloud gaming service.

OnLive and Deus Ex publisher Square Enix announced the coupon deal yesterday, which would let buyers of a boxed PC copy download and play another copy of the game, for free, via OnLive's cloud based network, a $50 value.

But apparently GameStop, which has its own digital distribution platform, wasn't on board with what it believes is helping to promote the competition. A letter sent out to GameStop employees instructing them to "immediately remove and discard the OnLive coupon from all the regular PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution" has been widely circulated, and GameStop has since officially confirmed the practice.

"Regarding the Deus Ex OnLive Codes: GameStop's policy is that we do not promote competitive services without a formal partnership," GameStop says on its Facebook page. "Square Enix packed a competitor's coupon within the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution without our prior knowledge and we did pull these coupons."

It's pretty upsetting news for those who like to believe that when they buy a new product, they are actually, you know, buying a new product.  Knowing a retailer tampered with a game box simply to thwart a promotion geared at saving gamers money is, to say the least, a little worrying.

GameStop, however, assures you that while they're breaking the seal on your new game box, your game itself should be fine.

"While the new products may be opened, we fully guarantee the condition of the discs to be new. If you find this to not be the case, please contact the store where the game was purchased and they will further assist," the company states.

So is it illegal? That's a bit fuzzy. Wired reports that Square Enix and OnLive might be able to make a case for "tortious interference," which occurs when one party intentionally damages another party's contractual or business relationships.

GameStop has raised the ire of gamers before. Just last year, the company was hit with  a class-action lawsuit over what consumers considered deceptive used game sales.

Tough Luck Skull
Effect: Enemies do saving throws
Where to find: Tsavo Highway
On Tsavo Highway, about halfway through the mission (right after you are forced to walk through a large blue barrier), you will come out of a tunnel on the highway, and see a large pipeline on your left. Drop down in between the two, and run to the wall in front of you. Follow the wall all the way to where it connects with the cliff on your right, and turn to the left. There should be a few ledges--simply crouch jump from ledge to ledge, and the last one should have the "Tough Luck" skull on it.
Mythic Skull
Effect: Every enemy on the field now has double their normal amount of health.
Where to find: Halo

Cowbell Skull
Effect: Explosive force increased (sputnik from H2)
Level: The Ark
Location: First pick up a grav lift from the small building near where you fight the scarab. Now proceed through the level until you reach the second sloping hallway (stairway), you should see some partitioned risers (platforms) halfway down. The skull is on the top level. Toss the grav-lift on the right side of the hall so it lands on the fourth little green dot from the door. Then run, jump, and use the grav-lift to propel you to the top. You should reach a ckeckpoint just as you enter the room so it you miss just try again.
Thunderstorm Skull
Mission: The Covenant
Effect: "Field promotions for everyone!" -- Upgrades enemies to their stronger versions.
After you shut down tower 1 and get access to the hornet, fly to tower 2 (the one the arbiter shut down). While walking up the stairs, go to the middle part that connects both and there should be a stair leading up to a platform where the skull is.
The 7 Terminals
The Ark:
1. Start the mission and once you enter the first building take a left into another door and now you should be in a curved corridor. On the inside is a Terminal.
2. After activating the bridge to let your comrades accross the gap, do a 180 and you should see it. (it does not open until you activate the bridge)
3. In the third building after defeating the scarab, kill the group of sleeping covenant, then follow the corridor downwards. Once you reach a door in front that is locked, immediately on the left there's an open door. Go through and walk straight off, then do a 180 to find a secret room. It is in there.
The Covenant:
1. When in the first tower standing on the lift, face the access panel and turn left. Jump over and it's right there.
2. Land your hornet on the second tower, walk towards the entrance but when you see the locked door, do a 180. Should be right in front of you.
3. When in the third tower standing on the lift, face the access panel and turn right. Jump over and it's right there.
Halo:
1. After reaching the end of the first cave, hug the right wall and you will see a building. Jump up onto the walkway and hang a left once inside. It's right there.

Catch Skull
Mission: The Storm
Effect: "Pull pin. Count to three. Throw." Every NPC carries two grenades and throws them often.
You can get this by performing a grenade jump off a warthog, or grab a ghost and go back to the ramp from which you first came out, using the ghost to push a big square crate back over to the front of the silo pod that the skull is on top of, then use the box as a place to jump from.
